Carer Support

Are you considered a Carer for someone?

On the surface, caregiving appears to be an entirely commendable duty. However, upon closer examination, it becomes evident that caregiving exacts a significant toll on those who undertake it regularly. Beyond the physical demands, the mental, emotional, and even spiritual responsibilities of caregiving are considerable, often overlooked.

Carers Australia, a non-profit organisation, champions the cause of Australia's unpaid caregivers. Their research reveals that the collective efforts of Australia's unpaid caregivers amount to nearly $78 billion worth of services annually if compensated.

The 2023 Carer Wellbeing Survey

Carers offer unpaid assistance to individuals dealing with disabilities, illnesses, chronic conditions, or age-related frailty. By 2018, Australia had approximately 2.65 million unpaid carers, constituting 11% of the population. Among them, about one-third served as primary carers, meaning they provided the majority of care related to essential activities such as self-care, mobility, and communication (ABS 2019). The absence of unpaid carers could result in an annual expense of approximately $77.9 billion for equivalent paid services (Deloitte 2022). Thus, it's crucial to prioritise the financial, emotional, and social well-being of carers to ensure they can sustain high-quality care provision over time.

However, carers often face challenges with their own well-being compared to the general population. This risk is particularly pronounced among those with more demanding caring responsibilities. Carers are also more prone to significant health issues, loneliness, and financial struggles compared to non-carers (Cummins et al. 2007; Schirmer and Riyanti 2021, Schirmer et al. 2022). Enhancing carers' well-being necessitates a comprehensive understanding of their current state, experiences, and the support services they utilise.
